A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Katazome: Crane and Tortoise

$105.00 USD

early twentieth century
38" x 13 1/4", 96.5 cm x 33.6 cm

What an exciting design on this length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth--we see a repeat pattern of large-scale tortoises and cranes.

They are boldly rendered in a stark yet shimmering white-on-blue pattern, the indigo being very dark and inky--almost black--which makes the repeat images stand out beautifully.

Both the crane and the tortoise are symbols that convey a wish for longevity. This type of auspicious motif is often found on bedding--this was taken from a futon cover--and often presented as part of a bridal trousseau.

The length is in good condition with little or no noticeable light fading and little to no surface abrasion.

This kind of imagistic, large-scale pattern is not often seen and this is a good one.
