A Length of Indigo Dyed Boro: Unusual Patching
early twentieth century
52" x 13 3/4", 132 cm x 35 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton that has been beautifully patched and mended; the length is slightly starched which is sometimes the case with old Japanese textiles.
This length is mended with seven patches and the two on the bottom right are from garments.
The large piece with the arc and the one below and in front of it are repurposed from what would have been some kind of article of clothing, possibly fromĀ a Western style shirt, possibly from a traditional shin guard. It is this lovely, curved top to this patch which makes it an artful contrast to the rest of the length.
The indigo color is still good and rich. The way the patches are place on this length create a visually interesting artwork, albeit unintended.
