A Length of Hand Spun Hand Woven Cotton: Sankuzushi

$85.00 USD

late nineteenth century
72" x 13", 183 cm x 33 cm

This length of hand spun, hand woven cotton cloth shows a variant on a type of pattern called sankuzushi, a kind of basket weave design that was very popular in Japan in the nineteenth century.

This length is particularly good for its color, its condition and its sankuzushi weave: it is also wonderful for its hand spun cotton yarns. This is a fantastic folk textile.

The pattern is small in scale and beautifully woven. As mentioned, the yarns are rustic and wonderful in texture.

There is one, lone patch to the length which adds a slightly jarring visual effect due to its contrast to the base cloth.

A very sophisticated length of old cotton weaving and one that speaks loud about 19th century Japanese hand woven cotton.

Recommended.
