A Length of Geometric Stitched and Tied Shibori: Indigo
early twentieth century
51 1/2" x 13 1/2", 131 cm x 34.25 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed shibori cotton--the indigo is more than likely not botanical--and it shows a complex design using stitched and tied techniques.
The pattern is based on diagonals: lines, blocks and "steps" and the design feeling is somewhat modern.
As this length comes from a yukata or an unlined, casual kimono there are ingrained creases from its time as a garment.
And please note in the lead photo shown here there is one shibori thread that is still embedded in the cloth. A nice discovery.
This is a bold and unusual pattern with lots of visual appeal.
