A Length of Faux Kasuri: Stencil Dyed Asa no Ha
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
58" x 12 3/4", 147 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a beautiful length of hand woven cotton cloth which is dyed a mid-range indigo tone, and which is patterned using a stencil dyeing method. The stencil dyeing method, surikomi, in this case is meant to mimic kasuri or ikat.
The pattern of this lovely, soft cloth is traditional: it is the hemp leaf, or asa no ha, and it is a motif that is no doubt familiar to many of you.
The cloth itself is beautiful in the hand and the pattern is beautifully rendered. Note the presence of one soybean-sized hole; otherwise, save some light surface abrasion and some insignificant snags to the surface of the cloth, this length is in good condition.
A really lovely length of old, hand loomed cotton, with a striking and beautiful hand dyed pattern.
