A Length of Fanciful Katazome Cloth: Chrysanthemums
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
62" x 13 3/4", 157.5 cm x 35 cm
This is a beautiful length of indigo dyed katazome cotton which shows a fairly large-scale, lushly rendered repeat of chrysanthemums swirling against a background of karakusa or arabesque.
The rendering of the chrysanthemums is complex and intricate and the design is made more interesting by the way the chrysanthemums are shown positioned in two opposing directions.
The indigo color is strong against the white, resisted patter, however there is some patina and fading from wear, especially on the proper right side of this length.
An absolutely lovely length of katazome cloth, this pattern is expertly realized.
