A Length of Faded Mottled Katazome Cotton: Fancy Pattern
late nineteenth century
38" x 13 1/4", 96.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a lovely, faded, mottled length of old indigo dyed katazome cotton.
Its design is a complex one that seems to sparkle; the sparkling effect is due to the stippling which is used to create all the linear effects of this design.
The pattern is that of fancy octagons which are interspersed by squares. Inside the octagon is a flower shape around which a trailing arabesque. Each square also contains a stylized flower.
The cloth is quite worn and faded all-over and there is an extremely light yellowing to the entire surface: this very slight yellowing is from age and it somehow enhances the color of the overall piece.
A delicate, complex and beautiful katazome pattern.
