A Length of Faded Katazome: Iron Oxide Details

$60.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
38" x 13 1/2", 96.5 cm x 34 cm

This length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth shows a repeat pattern of elaborately stylized chrysanthemums floating in a background of stippled blue and faintly drawn arabesques.

The floating chrysanthemums are tinted with bengara, an iron oxide-derived pigment which add a sparkling quality to the pattern or design.

The indigo dyed color is faded overall--and although the chrysanthemum design is typical of this kind of katazome cloth, the depiction of these chrysanthemums is slightly unusual.

Lovely.
