A Length of Faded Katazome Cotton: Lush Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
41" x 13 1/4", 104 cm x 33.5 cm
This length of hand spun, hand spun cotton is dyed in the stencil resist dyed or katazome method--and it shows a lush and large-scale pattern of peonies amid a field of arabesque.
A key detail to note first is that there are two large areas of rather strong light fading to the length: one on the top and a wedge-shaped one on the bottom. The length overall shows wear and some general light abrasion, and it is the beautiful pattern that is the real attraction to the piece.
The faded orange details are washed-out bengara or an iron oxide pigment based dye often seen on katazome cloth.
