A Length of Cotton Shibori: Large Scale Shippo Tsunagi
early to mid twentieth century
55" x 13 1/4", 140 cm x 33.5 cm
This length of indigo dyed cotton shibori shows an exuberant, large-scale rendition of the traditional design motif called shippo tsunagi, or interlocking circles.
The design is stitched onto the cotton cloth and after it is dyed the stitching is removed and we are left with this wonderful two-toned blue shibori coth. In person, the blues are rich in tone and the cotton is very white. Since this length was taken from an unlined cotton kimono or yukata, there are some ingrained creases from wear.
This is a really stunningly graphic length of old shibori with great visual appeal.
