A Length of Boro Cotton: Patches and Beautifully Subtle Kasuri Base Cloth
early twentieth century
74" x 13 1/2", 188 cm x 34 cm
This is length of indigo dyed cotton boro or patched and mended cloth. More than likely it was taken from a kimono which was then fashioned into a futon cover.
The length is woven from a beautifully subtle kasuri cotton cloth and is hand stitched from two separate pieces. There are 8 patches affixed to the surface and there is obvious light fading, most likely from the time when the length was part of a kimono. There is a small burn hole as well.
It is hard to describe the beautiful subtlety and artistry of the kasuri base cloth but have a look at the accompanying detail photos here for a glimpse onto it.
Really attractive.
