A Length of Boldly Designed Kasuri Cotton: Indigo
early to mid twentieth century
63" x 13 1/2", 160 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton double kasuri where both the warp and weft yarns are tied before dyeing and before they are woven.
The pattern is large-scale and eye-dazzling: an oversized plaid is host to variants on the well cover motif: yellow/orange cotton yarns also intersect to create a neat plaid in the center of the white, cross-like design on the right.
This hand woven length is in fairly good, used condition with one slight tear to it which can be seen on the accompanying detail photo. But otherwise the dye is still bright and rich and the pattern is unusual and bold.
