A Length of Beautiful Katazome Cotton: Elegant Roundels
late nineteenth century
63" x 13 3/4", 160 cm x 35 cm
This is a beautiful length of faded, indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth that shows a rich, repeat pattern that is so delicate in nature it appears to be of lace.
The repeat pattern is composed almost entirely of small dots that form a grid; inside the grid are fanciful roundels.
The circular motifs are elaborately constructed, stylized chrysanthemums, richly detailed. The grid in which these roundels sit is floral and is based on the wisteria design.
The indigo dye has faded to a lovely, grey colored patina; the cotton is thick and hand loomed.
This is a really beautiful length of old katazome and one with a very appealing pattern.
