A Length of 19th Century Katazome Cotton: Fancy Roundels
late nineteenth century
36 1/4" x 12 1/2", 92 cm x 31 cm
This length of katazome dyed cotton is of excellent quality and should be considered by serious collectors of this type of cloth.
The pattern is a tight repeat of fancy, delicately drawn roundels which are interspersed by a square-shaped flower design. The cloth is beautifully dark in color due to the richly dyed indigo and shows little light fading. Details of bengara, an iron oxide based pigment which yields an orange color were hand applied to the surface of the piece which give the length a luminous quality.
The design is complex and tight. It is beautiful.
For its complicated pattern, its light-giving colors and its good condition, this length of katazome cloth is a treasure.
