A Large Scale Miura Shibori Cotton Cloth: Splashy Pattern
ca. mid to late twentieth century
44" x 26", 111.5 cm x 66 cm
This wonderful and boldly designed shibori dyed cotton cloth shows a large-scale miura shibori pattern, one that suggests a kind of sun-dappled water effect.
This cloth is hand dyed on powerloomed cotton; the indigo is likely not botanical. However, the scale of the big miura in relation to the size and shape of the cotton cloth is a wonderful visual dynamic. The cotton is in good, used condition, with some ingrained creasing to its edges; it appears that this rectangle-shaped cloth may have originally been used as some kind furoshiki or wrapping/ storage cloth. There is a small, irregularly shaped hole near one of the two, hand finished, short edges. The hole is shown in the accompanying detail photos.
A striking piece of shibori dyed cotton.
