A Large Scale and Starkly Designed Katazome Panel: Oak Leaves
ca. late nineteenth century
58 1/2" x 14 1/4", 148.5 cm x 36 cm
What a beautiful, unusual length of indigo dyed katazome cotton. The repeat pattern of white-on-blue stylized oak leaves, in two variants, is stark, with wonderful graphic appeal.
The execution of the resisted design is somewhat flawed which adds character to the rendering and visual interest to the overall design. The cloth itself was used hard as can be seen by the slight surface abrasion, the small holes, and the mending--this cloth has three patches on the reverse side.
A really beautiful piece of old katazome cloth, very rich in folk beauty.
