A Handwoven Length of Cotton Stripes: Boldly Graphic
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
62" x 14", 157.5 cm x 35.5 cm
What an unusually--and boldly graphic--length of hand loomed cotton cloth.
The cloth shows a central, wide, bold black stripe with two black stripes of half this width residing close to the selvedge edges. Between the black stripes is a field of very subtle warm and cool blue tone-on-tone stripes, the effect of using a striped warp.
We are showing what would have been the "wrong" side of this cloth, therefore its color is still quite true to what it would have looked like when it was woven about 100 years ago. The proper "right" side of this cloth is quite faded and of a very different character to what we are picturing here.
Really great.
