{"product_id":"a-hand-written-temple-banner-to-kannon-bosatsu-1816","title":"A Very Tall Hand Written Temple Banner to Kannon Bosatsu: 1816","description":"\u003cp\u003edated 1816 or Bunka 12\u003cbr\u003e113\" x 24\", 287 cm x 61 cm\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis very tall, hand written banner is said to be inscribed in devotion to the Kannon Bosatsu, the \u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bodhisattva\"\u003ebodhisattva\u003c\/a\u003e \u003c\/i\u003eof compassion, or as is known in Sanskrit, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avalokite%C5%9Bvara\"\u003eAvalokitesvara.\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cloth is dated to the what can be translated in the Western calendar to 1816.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMagnificently hand spun, hand woven cotton is the base for the banner and it is very soft and drapey in the hand--almost gauzy. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSince this thing is 210 years old and had been used hard when it was made we see some overall, subtle discoloration to the cotton cloth and, of course, some stains and ingrained dirt near the two long edges.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe inscription is written by hand using \u003cem\u003esumi\u003c\/em\u003e or soot\/charcoal-based ink.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bottom edge, especially, is tattered as is to be expected on something so ancient.
