A Gorgeously Hand Spun Cotton Katazome Length: Peonies and Chrysanthemums
late nineteenth century
65" x 13", 165 cm x 33 cm
Just beautiful. This length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth is just what you would want to see in a Japanese folk textile.
Its cotton is beautifully hand spun, giving this piece the distinctive textural feature which the Japanese refer to as ito aji or thread flavor, a very important aspect of old cloth.
The faded indigo color is soft and luscious as is the pattern, a repeat of peonies and chrysanthemums. The pattern is a traditional one which was often used on bedding textiles.
Also noteworthy is the fabulous patina to the surface. This soft burnishing of the cloth adds a beautiful quality of visual warmth which is one of the reasons we all enjoy looking at and collecting old Japanese textiles.
A wonderful old length of katazome cotton.
