A Fragment of Old Katazome: Carp

$75.00 USD

late nineteenth century
20 1/4" x 13 3/4", 51.25 cm x 35 cm

This small piece of indigo dyed katazome cotton shows a beautiful and fairly rare pattern but it is also notable because of its good age: by the quality of the cotton and by the look of the pattern this length assuredly dates to the late nineteenth century.

The pattern is a repeat of carp amid a field of stylized water and cherry blossoms, beautifully done. The indigo is rich, dark and warm in tone.

The cloth is of hand spun cotton and as can be seen on the accompanying photos the left hand side of it is affected by some fairly intense, ingrained wear and by light fading, most especially the lower, left hand corner.

A wonderful fragment of indigo dyed cotton from old Japan.
