A Fragment of Indigo Dyed Cotton Katazome: Faux Shibori
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
20" x 13 3/4", 51 cm x 35 cm
This fragment of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth shows a really charming repeat pattern of folding fans, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms and hemp leaves which float and dance on the surface of this white-on-blue textile.
The hemp leaf and cherry blossom designs both are rendered in a manner that is meant to mimic shibori dyeing, an often-used device in katazome dyeing and one that here is done to good effect.
The repeat pattern is delightful, the cotton is hand woven, and this fragment is in used condition, with one hold, shown in the accompanying detail photograph.
