A Fragment of Blue-on-White Katazome: Swallows and Pine Mountains
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
11 1/2" x 13", 29 cm x 33 cm
This small fragment of indigo dyed cotton shows a jishiro katazome or blue-on-white stencil resist dyed pattern.
The pattern is delicate and small. It shows a repeat of swallows frolicking in the skies above pine mountains, the hatching of narrow lines throughout the design seems to suggest mist, haze or fog.
A lovely, small panel of old, indigo dyed katazome cloth.
