A Four Panel Fragment of Miura Shibori: Yukata Piece
mid twentieth century
25" x 54", 63.5 cm x 137 cm
This length of light weight, indigo dyed cotton is a cross section of a shibori yukata: it shows four full panels in the center and two quarter panels on the sides.
The pattern is lovely and buoyant: streamers of miura shibori rain down in uneven, vertical rows; the rows are punctuated by large, blank designs that evoke an iris or some kind of summer flower.
The cotton is most likely machine loomed, but it has a lovely, light drapiness and a good texture. There are some insignificant stains on the piece which are attempted to be shown on the accompanying photographs, and there is a vertical tear to the cloth on the narrow piece on the far right.
A wonderfully good amount of hand made shibori for study or for use in the textile arts.
