A Fabulous Boro Fragment: Oversized Katazome Floral Pattern
ca. early twentieth century
50" x 13 1/2", 127 cm x 34 cm
This is a lovely and interesting cotton boro textile that can be appreciated fully and in two different ways when looking at each of its two sided.
The base cloth is an indigo dyed katazome cloth which shows a crowded field of large-scale, lush and multi-petaled peonies. The colors are rich, deep blue with details of a kind of diluted inky grey.
The reverse side shows very interesting patching: the surface of almost entirely covered with an olive drab colored cotton, the notched pieces almost interlocking, forming a visually interesting arrangement. Four patches comprise this geometric arrangement.
A lovely length of old boro whose two sides offer very different and interesting options for appreciation.
Really lovely.
