A Elaborately Designed Pattern in Katazome: Octagons

$90.00 USD

late nineteenth century
36" x 12 3/4", 91.5 cm x 32,5 cm

This is an old piece of indigo dyed katazome cotton--the cloth is hand woven from hand spun yarns.

The pattern is an intricate one and is of a type that was designed to be associated with the look of brocade silk cloth. The design is based on octagons and squares.

Inside the octagons are highly stylize "water dragons" licking around a central floriform image. Invented, decorative flowers fill the squares.

There is a faded ochre tone that lends visual variety to the piece and adds an overall richness to this complex and intricate design.

A really wonderful length of old katazome cloth with a superb pattern and great fibers.

Recommended.
