A Double Sided Katazome Length: Intricate, Rich Pattern
early twentieth century
46 1/2" x 12 1/2", 118 cm x 31.75 cm
This is an inky-blue length of katazome dyed cotton, notable because it was resisted on each of its two sides, creating an equally clear white-on-blue pattern on both sides.
The cotton is hand woven and is of nice, heavy weight. The all over image shows a repeat pattern of flowers and folding fans, the images bright and slightly blurred. It seems this length was taken from a juban or under-kimono.
A very, very good length of old katazome and one with an interesting pattern which is beautifully dyed on two sides.
