A Double-Sided Katazome Length: Diamond Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
66" x 13", 167.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a beautiful length of indigo dyed cotton which has been resist dyed in the katazome method. The design is bright white against a dark blue, the striking contrast is in part due to the fact that the piece was resisted on both its sides, making it "reversible."
The design is a complex diamond pattern showing stylized chrysanthemums within a spray of white dots.
The leaf pattern that creates the barriers between the diamonds seems to be stylize wisteria.
In good, bright, used condition this is a lovely length of katazome dyed cotton with a wonderful design.
