A Double Sided Katazome Length: Cranes, Diamonds and Patches
late nineteenth century
54 1/2" x 12 1/2", 138.5 cm x 31.5 cm
This is a beautiful length of indigo katazome dyed cotton which shows a repeat pattern of blue-on-blue double cranes which are configured in a diamond pattern. What is nice about this cloth is that both its sides are interesting to look at: one for the pattern and the other for the configuration of pieces and patches.
The side which shows the pattern is well-worn and the stitching from the repairs of the reverse side are very obvious on this side: the patches on the reverse side lend texture to this patterned side.
The patched side is subtle in its repair and darker than the figured side; the length is composed of three separate pieces which are hand stitched together--so the question is, which is the more attractive of the two sides?
A really lovely old textile with good age and wonderful yarns.
