A Double-Sided Indian Folk Drawing: Yantra Amid Sacred Language
ca. early Twentieth century
10 1/4" x 4 1/2", 26 cm x 11.5 cm
This drawing--ink on paper--shows a centrally placed yantra which is a Hindu diagram which identifies a particular deity and is used as a form of mental focus and prayer: in a way, a yantra is a spiritual conduit for connecting with the particular powers of a god, a goddess, or at times a planet.
Vertically formatted, this drawing is surrounded by Devanagari script, possibly Sanskrit: the verso, too, is stacked with the same script.
Pay special note to the red smudges on the writing: these appear to be smudged of kum kum, or red pigment, most likely placed on certain words to honor their power.
