A Contemporary Hand Dyed Indian Cotton Square #6: People Tree
25" x 24", 63.5 cm x 61
This is a (slightly off) square of lightweight cotton that was designed by the innovative textile design studio based in New Delhi, India, called People Tree.
People Tree's textile designs draw on traditional Indian dyeing techniques often using mud-resist or block print, but their original designs, which spring from conventional methods, always show startling innovation and are often eccentric in nature.
This square of cloth is machine finished and appears to be dyed in a resist dye technique in combination with a wood block print.
The charming repeat pattern is that of clusters of traditional Indian water jugs intones of pale, grey/yellow-green, teal and a dull khaki color. The printing is not at all neat or precise which adds to its charm.
A delightful piece.
