A Complex Resist Dyed 19th Century Cotton Panel: Brooms, Rakes, Pine Cones
late nineteenth century
32 1/2" x 12 3/4", 82.5 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a wonderful, rich example of 19th century, complex katazome dyeing. The mood of this piece of cloth is rich and dark, and the dyed and resisted images are exact, precise and sparkling.
The repeat shows rakes and brooms set at angles to one another. Pine cones fall about them as does what appears to be snow. These images are set against a background of grey and black colored "texture" and it is this aspect of the design that sets the wintry mood.
In very good condition, this is a stunning length of katazome that could easily be framed and displayed as art.
