A Three Color Katazome Fragment: Large Scale Phoenix and Paulownia
early twentieth century
27" x 13 3/4", 68.5 cm x 35 cm
This is a beautiful fragment of katazome cotton. It shows a large-scale depiction of the legendary phoenix, its long feathers dangling around its body as it hovers above its mount, the kiri or paulownia tree.
As can be seen in the detail photographs that accompany this post, the design is rendered in indigo, grey and orange colors and the resist dyed image shows some imperfections. The image itself, however, is a lush depiction of this traditional subject and here we see one full repeat with a fragment of another.
The left-hand side of this length is missing its selvedge edge.
This boldly patterned image, rare for its large size, is fantastically good and not at all common.
