A Complex and Richly Designed Katazome Length: Large Scale Design
early twentieth century
34 1/2" x 12 3/4", 87.5 cm x 32.5 cm
This short length of indigo, hand woven cotton was dyed in the stencil resist or katazome method. it shows a vividly detailed and large-scale repeat pattern of chrysanthemums which crowd the surface and which are set against a background showing the trailing vine or karakusa motif.
The pattern is both resisted (the white areas) and stenciled (the grey areas) which add richness to the surface design.
In good, used condition, the color of both the indigo and the grey are still quite intact and vibrant.
