A Colored Plaid Boro Length: Small Patches
mid twentieth century
57" x 13 1/2", 145 cm x 34 cm
This lightweight, probably machine loomed cotton length is woven in a plaid that is composed of a palette of soft autumnal colors.
Seven cotton patches of various colors are hand stitched to the surface; no doubt this was a panel from a futon cover, and the woven design is very much like a good deal of cloth that was produced in Japan in the 1930s and 40s. Please note one small tear to the cloth shown in the accompanying detail photograph.
A great color combination and charming patched textile from old Japan.
