A Collection of 27 19th Century Hand Drawn Sketches: Kyoto Textile Studio
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
as shown: 19" x 11", 48 cm x 28 cm
This wonderful collection of papers and drawings is less a folio of thematic studies than it is a hodgepodge of random works that have been bound together for safe keeping.
The papers are of various sizes and dimensions, some of them are literally slips of tissue paper onto which a marvelously controlled ink sketch has been rendered.
Mostly drawn on tissue-weight paper these twenty-seven drawings are in line, wash, black and white and color and they cover a narrow range of subjects, mainly florals and botanicals, some of them drawn in tiny scale.
This set of sketches was said to have come from a Kyoto textile designer's studio, and the types of designs seen in this group reinforce this notion.
