A Boldly Patterned Stencil Dyed Cotton Panel: Brown on White
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
44 1/2" x 13", 113 cm x 33 cm
This boldly graphic length of hand loomed cotton shows a design based on two types of diamond shapes overlaid onto one another: a very wide one atop a quite narrow one.
The deep brown color was applied directly to the cloth using a stencil and it most likely is a mineral-based pigment which could or could not be bengara, the Japanese dyestuff which is based on iron oxide. The cloth is dyed on both sides.
The pattern is just fantastic and the colors are simple yet striking. The cloth is in good used condition, free of stains and shows little, if any, wear. Note one, horizontal slight tear to the selvedge, about 1/4" or .5 cm.
A marvelous length of stenciled dyed cloth.
