A Boldly Patterned Katazome Length: Stylized Chrysanthemums
early twentieth century
60" x 13", 152.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a wonderful length of indigo dyed katazome cotton, the cotton being of hand spun, hand woven yarns and the repeat pattern being bold and graphic.
The design imprinted into the cloth is a crowded and light-hearted rendition of chrysanthemums, a popular motif for bedding material. This panel was taken from a futon cover.
The cotton is of good weight and the indigo is dark; the cotton is bright white and the overall condition is good. There is a tear to the cloth, shown in the accompanying detail photos, as well as some very soft light fading, barely noticeable, to the bottom, right area.
This is a really marvelous katazome design showing an unusual and charming rendition of the chrysanthemum.
