A Beautifully Gradient Plaid Length: Rich Indigo
ca. late nineteenth century
65" x 13 1/2", 165 cm x 34 cm
This length of indigo dyed plaid is rich in its varied tones of blue.
The palest blues are very warm; in Japanese this "sky" blue is called asagi. There is a medium tone blue and a deeply colored blue that, in combination with the asagi, create this beautifully subtle, gradient blue plaid cloth.
The handwoven cloth has a very good hand and it shows two patches. There is one small area of loss, around the size of a fingertip, to the middle, right hand side of the cloth, picture in the accompanying photos.
At the bottom, left hand side of the length is a short, vertical tear near the selvedge, also shown in photos.
A really gorgeous length of hand woven cotton from old Japan.
