A Beautifully Faded Length of Old Katazome: Imagined Flowers and Arabesques
late nineteenth century
33" x 13 1/2", 83.75 cm x 34 cm
This is a jewel of a katazome fragment.
It shows a remarkably beautiful pattern which has been wonderfully faded by time and wear, and this wear has very nicely brought out the quality of the cotton which his hand spun and hand woven.
The pattern shows a repeat of imagined flowers which are set against a background of graceful arabesques. The resist dyed pattern is heightened by stenciled-on details in black which, too, have faded.
A stunning little fragment.
