A Beautifully Faded Length of Katazome Cotton: Chrysanthemums
early twentieth century
57 1/2" x 13 1/2", 146 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of beautifully faded, indigo dyed cotton cloth whose surface shows a soft patina from age. This cloth was dyed using a stencil resist or katazome method.
The pattern is a repeat of large, many-petaled and lush chrysanthemum flowers against a background of trailing vines or karakusa. This length is composed of two pieces which were hand stitched together, the second of the two pieces being a short one at the proper top of the panel.
The cloth is of a very nice weight and is beautifully hand woven. There is one patched repair to the piece, the patch visible on the opposite side of the cloth.
A lovely length of good looking, katazome dyed cotton.
