A Beautifully Colored Rustic Katazome Length: Large Scale Arabesque

$125.00 USD

late nineteenth century
70 1/2" x 13 1/4", 179 cm x 33.5 cm

This absolutely beautiful length of resist dyed cotton cloth shows a large-scale repeat of the karakusa or arabesque pattern.

The cotton cloth is hand woven from hand spun yarns and in itself it is beautiful. The pattern with its wide, trailing and convoluting arcs is just wonderful in the scale it is presented in--and it is not at all usual to see this kind of pattern in this size and in this color combination.

When this length was first dyed the now dusty, pale orange color was probably a vivid tangerine tone. The blue was once deep in color so the combination of these saturated colors must have been striking.

Now the colors are muted but there is still great beauty in this length of katazome dyed cotton.

As can be seen on the detail photos the surface is quite faded and there is evidence of wear in the form of some very small holes and some very small stains, none of which detract from the overall, lovely appearance of this old length of cotton.

Just wonderful.

Very recommended.
