A Beautiful Unused Sakiori Obi: Color Blocks and Texture
mid twentieth century
124" x 9", 315 cm x 23 cm
This is a really beautifully colored and textured sakiori obi, or a rustic, traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn. When it came to us it was sealed with basting stitches indicating that it was never worn after it was woven.
The colors are set in blocks and stripes and the order of the width of these color blocks changes down the length of the obi which add a beautiful design element to this piece. The warp yarns are of a pink/orange color and the weft yarns are a combination of silk and cotton rag strips.
A beautiful, richly toned folk textile.
