A Beautiful Length of 19th Century Katazome: Shrimp and Peonies

$95.00 USD

late nineteenth century
28 1/2" x 13", 72.5 cm x 33 cm

This is an absolutely gorgeous length of old, multi-toned, indigo dyed katazome cotton.

It shows a background of gradient stripes of a type that was often seen on old Japanese cloth that is meant to call to mind a waterfall.

Overlaid onto this is staggered and symmetrical pattern of roundels that show a peony and a shrimp: the entire cloth is detailed with grey and black.

Note as well that in certain areas the white background stripes pass in front of an aspect of the roundel, a surprising and a fascinating technical detail.

The overall color is beautifully clear and there is a small "L" shaped tear to the piece, shown in an accompanying detail photo.

Very recommended.
