A 19th Century Pieced Silk Drawstring Bag: Botanical Dyes

$150.00 USD

late nineteenth century
as shown: 6" x 7" x 7", 15 cm x 18 cm x 18 cm

This is a tremendously attractive drawstring bag that is made of lightweight, figured silks that are all dyed in botanical dyes. There are twelve pieces in total which comprise this piece.

Each of the pieces of silk that make up this bag is beautiful in its own right, especially those on the bottom of the bag: the purple fragment is dyed in gromwell root or shikon as its called in Japan and the blue silk fragment is dyed in the yuzen method and shows gold couching.

The bag is lined in hand spun, hand woven cotton and the drawstring seems original to the bag. All the loops that the drawstring passes through are intact.

A very, very good silk pouch with wonderful age.
