{"product_id":"a-19th-century-pieced-crepe-silk-juban-itajime-dyeing-and-katazome","title":"A 19th Century Pieced Crepe Silk Juban: Itajime Dyeing and Katazome","description":"\u003cp\u003elate nineteenth century\u003cbr\u003eshoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 57\" x 48\", 145 cm x 122 cm\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a wonderfully designed, executed and colored silk \u003cem\u003ejuban\u003c\/em\u003e which is still in very good condition for its age and material.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA \u003cem\u003ejuban\u003c\/em\u003e is an under-kimono and often they were made from pieces as this one is.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pieces that constitute most of the garment are crepe silk which is\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.srithreads.com\/collections\/various-folk-textiles-and-other\/products\/a-hand-carved-itajime-board-beautiful-hemp-leaf-pattern\"\u003e \u003cem\u003eitajime\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e dyed in safflower or \u003cem\u003ebenibana\u003c\/em\u003e which yields an orange color and the small figured or Edo komon\u003cem\u003e \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.srithreads.com\/collections\/katazome\"\u003ekatazome\u003c\/a\u003e \u003c\/em\u003esilk. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe design and layout of the\u003cem\u003e juban\u003c\/em\u003e is simple and visually arresting as is quite evident from seeing this piece as shown both front and back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pattern on the\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.srithreads.com\/products\/two-stitched-panels-of-ethereal-silk-itajime-dyed-cloth-benibana-or-safflower?_pos=11\u0026amp;_sid=01d37cb18\u0026amp;_ss=r\"\u003e \u003cem\u003eitajime\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e dyed silk is large-scale and interesting: it shows an interesting and highly stylized version of the traditional Japanese design motif known as \u003cem\u003eshochikubai\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003ci\u003eShochikubai\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, is the design triad of bamboo, pine and plum blossoms, which conveys good wishes.  Plum shows courage as its blossoms, the first of the year, burst forth from under ice; the bamboo is resilience since it bends but does not break; the pine is a symbol of long life and also of a faithful marriage as its needles fall in pairs.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a really wonderful example of an old, pieced \u003cem\u003ejuban\u003c\/em\u003e and one that has an impressive amount of safflower dyed silk that is still shows very good color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is one stain, shown, otherwise there does not seem to be any glaring flaws to the piece.
