A 19th Century Katazome Fragment: Greys and Stippling

$125.00 USD

mid to late nineteenth century
19 1/2" x 13 1/2", 49.5 cm x 34.25 cm

This faded and worn fragment of absolutely beautiful, 19th century katazome cotton is grey in color and its design is rendered in small dots, the concentration of which define shapes.

The design is heightened by black and rust colored highlights--and the design shows a beautifully realized pattern of cherry blossoms and gourds in a rather ingenious manner of illustration.

The cloth is old, probably from the mid 19th century and more than likely it was used in the service of bedding.

It is a complex and subtle pattern in good colors and for this reason it is desirable.
