A 19th Century Katazome Dyed Sampler: Multiple Designs

$175.00 USD

early twentieth century
73" x 12", 185.5 cm x 30.5 cm

This wonderful length of cotton is taken from a katazome dyer or broker's sample bolt. It shows 14 full designs in one repeat and two partial repeats.

The cotton seems commercially loomed and it is lightweight. The patterns are all of a fairly small scale which in Japan would be referred to as chuugata, a kind of mid-sized repeat.

The patterns show typically Japanese designs in variation and many represent stylized natural forms such as willow, chrysanthemum, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, cloves and swallows, to name but a few.

The dye is a lovely dark brown tone and there is some slight wear from age, but the wear is not distracting from the over all appearance and appeal of this sample length.
