The cartoon is done with opaque watercolor on hand made paper.  In the detail photos that accompany this entry we have shown an image of actual festival banners as an example.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHaving done some research and having asked some friends in Japan, we are just a bit stumped by the image: clearly these drawings represent Chinese ancients who are dressed in historical costume.  They are most likely of the Taoist bent or they be scholars, poets or connoisseurs.  In any case, as they will be shown at festival time in Japan where good wishes and high mindedness are the order of the day, they are certainly an elevated sort, whether it be in the realm of philosophy or the arts.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNote the flowing, layered, silk robes and the accoutrements of authority that enhance the persona of each of the seven Chinese ancients.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBeautifully done. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIts original intent is not know, but it is speculated that it may have had something to do with raising silkworms for the silk spinning industry. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn old Japan, and up through the mid-twentieth century, private households would raise silkworms as a kind of cottage industry and as a way to augment their income. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has been suggested that this wonderful thing may have originally been used in this service, perhaps as some kind of \"sling\" to hold cocoons or to feed silkworms (although silkworms are usually fed on a stiff, open holed net).\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePore over the attached photos here to see the many different pieces of paper that have been glued together to create this large sheet of stiff paper.  \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nAnd notice the remarkable and wonderful little sgraffito, the strange, smiling face which someone doodled on the paper, probably almost two hundred years ago.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nJust fantastic, unusual, and a true folk object. is very clear, this is a fairly commercial kind of \u003ci\u003eyukata\u003c\/i\u003e which is dyed using nontraditional techniques.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat is wonderful about it is the photo of the man who is modeling a \u003ci\u003eyukata\u003c\/i\u003e, which, of course, is an image of what the kimono will look like once it is cut, put together and sewn to be a \u003ci\u003eyukata,\u003c\/i\u003e or an unlined, casual kimono.  Note that the photo is hand stitched to the bolt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs well, the two brand labels are very attractive--and to be fair, the cotton's printed pattern is quite nice.  The pattern is narrow stripes over which a mottled blue is printed, not bad at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e Collectible, lovely, and slightly darker in color than the one pictured on its right.  Each shows a surface that is a bit nicked and scuffed, and each of the \u003ci\u003etabi\u003c\/i\u003e last's surfaces is beautifully burnished from years--or decades--of handling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a really lovely pair of old, wooden \u003ci\u003etabi\u003c\/i\u003e lasts, and certainly an item that calls up steady.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eShinsi\u003c\/i\u003e are very thin bamboo rods.  Each end is set with a pin.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe length of cloth is clamped with the \u003ci\u003eharite\u003c\/i\u003e and is stretched between two points.  The \u003ci\u003eshinshi\u003c\/i\u003e are then used to keep the stretched cloth from curling onto itself.  One of the pin-set ends of the bamboo rod is jabbed into the selvedge; likewise the other pin-set ends is jabbed into the other.  This is done repeatedly all the way down the length of the cloth to keep it suspended and flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you have ever seen a full \u003ci\u003etanmono\u003c\/i\u003e or cotton or hemp kimono roll, you will have noticed that the selvedges seem stretched at regular intervals--this is the result of \u003ci\u003eshinshi\u003c\/i\u003e having been placed at these stressed areas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA marvelous object, still very usable for weavers or clasps.  The color is fine, there are just a few, faint stains (see accompanying photographs) and very slight and unnoticeable mending.  The collar area shows just a bit of loss and surface.  Most likely the damage is the result of fire, since the white, inner cotton yarns show some evidence of being burnt.  The area of loss is about 3\" x 2\", 7.5 x 5 cm in size.  Under the white, cotton inner yarns shows some of the core of the ball which seems to be cotton floss.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe outer, decorative cotton yarns are the colors of rust, pale indigo and Thus the farmers in Sasano Village came to specialize in this type of carved wood folk toy.  The wing and tail feathers of their hawks and roosters are pared into thin curlicues with a few deft strokes of a heavy kife.  This techinique is derived from one used by the Ainu aborigines on Hokkaido to produce wood ritual implements with long, curling shavings attached.  The curling streamers on the Ainu ceremonial imlements in turn relate to the gohei, sacred white paper streamers, used to mark off a sacred site in Shinto, the indigenous religion of
