Tabi are the traditional Japanese split-toe "socks" that are worn under straw sandals or zori--evidence of which is the faint wear pattern shown coming from between the toe area of each of the tabi.
This cotton pair is unusual and beautiful for the reason that it is hand stitched from twice-dyed indigo miura shibori. The cotton shibori cloth is more than likely recycled or repurposed from an existing garment--the pair of tabi is lined in brown cotton kasuri cloth, again, seemingly re-used.
They are well-worn as can be seen by the abraded and torn checked cotton soles.
An unusual and beautiful pair of shibori dyed tabi.
