early twentieth century
24" x 11 3/4", 61 cm x 30 cm

This indigo dyed cotton bag was used hard during its lifetime as can be witnessed by the wear to the piece, especially in the form of the small holes and catches to the back of the bag.

However it is a very handsome thing with good age, and, what need not be mentioned, the lovely chain stitch sashiko work to the proper front of the bag. It was said that this bag was used for rice, and if you turn the bag inside-out you do see evidence in the form of strands of rice straw. Bags of this sort, however, were used in many ways and for many purposes.

The bag is entirely hand stitched and it is fully lined as is shown on the accompanying detail photographs.

A really nice hand made bag from old Japan.
